Filmmakers Present WAR AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Dream Catcher Films, Inc., announces a special evening titled WAR AND THE ENVIRONMENT to be held in the Wechsler Theater at American University, Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at 7:30pm.
American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking and Filmmakers for Conservation are sponsoring the evening which includes local filmmakers in production and those in development on stories about war and the environment.
The audience will get a sneak peak at Dream Catcher Films, Inc.’s latest production FINDING OUR VOICES, will hear stories from a returning Iraqi veteran, Sgt. John Bruhns, and hear of a project in development by Alice and Lincoln Day that chronicles the devastation of war on the environment in a variety of countries.
Executive Producer, Holly Stadtler, Director/Writer Vicki Hughes and Coordinating Producer Laurel Jensen will speak on behalf of Dream Catcher Films. They will share how their personal commitment to stories about the environment and a need to conserve natural resources has moved them to be politically active against the war in Iraq and how their concern for a peaceful world has brought about the evolution of FINDING OUR VOICES, their latest documentary. This film, currently in edit, puts a human face to the issues at hand: war, civil liberties and social injustice. The documentary introduces courageous citizens from diverse backgrounds engaged in a broad range of issues who are taking an active role in their democracy.
Director/Writer Vicki Hughes reports, “While the mainstream media seems unwilling to tackle many of the threats to our country and our world head on, courageous and committed citizens have undertaken the often unappreciated task of defending the heritage that is American democracy. FINDING OUR VOICES celebrates the lives of these warriors for justice and raises for consideration the essential role of dissent in a healthy democracy.”
Alice and Lincoln Day recently returned from a fact finding trip looking at archival film and talking with members of the UN Environment Program's Post-Conflict Assessment Unit. Their film will focus on the impact of military preparations and actual conflict on the natural world. The Days serve on the advisory board of the D.C. Environmental Film Festival and they have noted a dearth of films about war's effect on the environment; they want to fill the void. Through the documentary, they propose to show how weapons throughout history have become increasingly lethal to both human beings and the natural environment. In their film, they plan to deal with the effects of nuclear weapons and address environmental devastation, and the suffering it causes people, from extensive deforestation, unexploded land mines, depleted uranium (DU), contamination of water supplies and soil.
