Synopsis
Finding Our Voices
examines dissent against the invasion of
Iraq
through courageous Americans who sacrificed
much while speaking out against their
government. The film chronicles people
like Adele Welty who lost her son, a
firefighter on 9/11/01, who says, “I knew
the best legacy I could build for Timmy would
be one of peace, to try to stop any more
innocent civilians from being
killed.” People like Brady Kiesling,
who worked for the State Department for 20
years, but sacrificed his career -- resigning
before the war in Iraq began when the Bush
Administration abandoned diplomacy. And
soldiers like Army Sgt. Camilo Mejia, a
conscientious objector who was court martialed
for refusing to return to Iraq and torture
prisoners. These are just 3 of the many
‘peaceful patriots’ who march, sacrifice
their jobs, risk imprisonment and face ridicule
to act for a peaceful America. From
grandmothers to legislators, from soldiers to
musicians these activists for non-violence
share a different way of being American.
In a society which at best marginalizes their
dissent and at worst condemns it to ridicule
and even active suppression...they pick up the
banner of idealism. In Finding Our
Voices, we raise their voices, to be
heard by all of us living in times of conflict,
and for the generations to come...reminding us
that passion for justice and commitment to a
cooperative and peaceful world is
possible...that any and all of us can wage
peace.
